Angels

My 7-year old son:  Mom… Grandma told me angels are real.  Are they?

Me:  No.  There are lots of stories about angels, but there is absolutely no proof that they exist.

My son:  Grandma says that angels watch over us and keep us safe.

Me:  Yes… she believes that is true.  I used to have to say a prayer before I went to bed that said “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, and angels watch me through the night, until I wake with morning light.”  I always thought it was a little bit creepy… someone watching me while I sleep.

My son:  But why do people believe that?

Me:  I suppose because, just like believing in a god, they like to think someone is watching out for them and keeping them safe.  That they have someone to call on in case they are in trouble.

My son:  I’d rather believe in Superman.

I agree! If you are going to believe in a fictional character who protects you, superman is way better than God - plus,...

About

Avatar I'm JJ. Female. If you hang out with me you'll get thoughts on atheism, secular parenting, ethics, feminism and politics (liberal, pro-choice) and occasionally excerpts from conversations with my 8-year-old son (there's a link below for most of the conversations and parenting posts). I don't accept anonymous asks, but if you request a private response, I will oblige. Also, because I get asked a lot, my url comes from the phrase "Teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think." That's my parenting philosophy in a nutshell.
