I Believe in Thor

My 7 year old son:  Mom?  Thor is a god, right?

Me:  Right.  In Norse mythology, he was the god of thunder.

My son:  And he was really strong and he could fly and fight and he protected people, right?

Me:  I think so, yes.  I don’t know a lot about Norse mythology, but I think he was  generally a good guy that protected humans.

My son:  And he was huge.  And he had a super powerful hammer that could build OR destroy, right?

Me:  Ha!  Yes.  I think that’s actually a line from the Thor movie, but it’s probably what people believed.

My son:  So how come people don’t believe he’s real anymore?  He is way, WAY more awesome than that Jesus guy.

About

Avatar I'm JJ. Female. If you hang out with me you'll get thoughts on atheism, secular parenting, ethics, feminism and politics (liberal, pro-choice) and occasionally excerpts from conversations with my 8-year-old son (there's a link below for most of the conversations and parenting posts). I don't accept anonymous asks, but if you request a private response, I will oblige. Also, because I get asked a lot, my url comes from the phrase "Teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think." That's my parenting philosophy in a nutshell.
