Fundamentals…

To Liberal Christians:  Because the people on the fringe, the ones who allow their children to die rather than taking them to the doctor, the ones who “Thank God for dead soldiers,” the ones who reject science and truth and teach their children that evolution doesn’t happen and the Earth is 6,000 years old, the ones who decry homosexuality as a demon curse…  these are people of perfect faith in your holy book.
Just because you have enough sense to reject the more idiotic parts of the Bible, doesn’t make them disappear from the Bible.  YOU have to claim these people as believers in your religion.  Because they are.  The fundamentalists follow the Bible better than you do.
Of course, you’ll argue, “No!  Jesus is about LOVE!  Christianity is about LOVE!  These people do not represent my faith!”
But the thing is… they do.  And that’s your problem as a Christian, not ours, as atheists, for pointing it out.  ~JJ

Did Jesus say “I’ve come to abolish the old word.”?? Oh, no, that’s right he fully endorses it instead. It takes an especially subjective and selective reading of the bible to conclude otherwise.
CARM.org, the Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry has this to say:
“Since Jesus is God in flesh, performed a life of miraculous healings, died and the cross, and was miraculously resurrected three days later, what He taught on issues of doctrine are vastly important. Since He was God in flesh, whatever He taught is true. This means that we can trust the accuracy of the Old Testament Scriptures on issues of history, science, and moral instruction.”
That part of you that loves your fellow humans too much to believe that they’ll burn in hell or that God would order the slaughter of thousands of babies, that’s your own secular moral instinct that directly contradicts the foundations of your religion. You’d be better off chucking that book and working from your own heart. The fact that you still use and attempt to validate the veracity of that book does little to bolster the ideas of love and acceptance that you think it does, and much to support the vile assholes who use it as a weapon. In other words, your refusal to condemn the bibles lends sheep’s clothing to the wolves.
The hate, prejudice and violence that fundamentalism is known for comes along as a stow-away on your good-ship Lollipop of “love and forgiveness”.

About

Avatar I'm JJ. Female. If you hang out with me you'll get thoughts on atheism, secular parenting, ethics, feminism and politics (liberal, pro-choice) and occasionally excerpts from conversations with my 8-year-old son (there's a link below for most of the conversations and parenting posts). I don't accept anonymous asks, but if you request a private response, I will oblige. Also, because I get asked a lot, my url comes from the phrase "Teach children HOW to think, not WHAT to think." That's my parenting philosophy in a nutshell.
